Healthcare Reform or is it Greater Taxation
(05/11/2010)

We are approaching two months since the most significant bill in American history was signed into law. What have we learned during this time?

  1. There isn’t any language written into the bill that deals directly with the reduction of healthcare premiums.
  2. A Cadillac plan isn’t described by benefits, but by cost. If rates go up high enough (and they will), we get to pay a 40% tax.
  3. By July 1, 2010 all states will offer a temporary high risk pool for those people who cannot obtain coverage due to preexisting conditions.
  4. All group and individual plans, including self insured plans and grandfathered plans, within six months of enactment, will have to cover dependents up to age 26 under current law. Dependents can be married and will also be eligible for the group health insurance income tax exclusion. However, through 2014 grandfathered group plans will only have to cover dependents who do not have another source of employer-sponsored coverage.
  5. Specific preventive care services will be covered without cost sharing. In addition emergency services will be covered at the in-network level regardless of provider.
  6. Waiting periods can only be 90-days for those employers who offer coverage.
  7. All employers would be required to enroll employees in a new national public long-term care program, unless the employee opted out.

This is only a small taste of what we are going to receive. And based on what you see how can we expect insurance premiums to go down??

By law, everyone will be required to purchase health coverage. If you choose not to, you will pay a fine.

With pre-existing no longer an issue, why would anyone purchase care prior to an illness??? Imagine getting sick and then applying for coverage and the insurance company having to pay all claims. I wish we could purchase auto insurance after the accident and the insurance carrier would cover the damages.

Yeah, I can see how this will allow the insurance companies to stay in business and help all Americans. Remember this, you had better be careful of what you’re wishing for….you’re LIABLE to get it good!
